The England striker has had a scan on the hamstring injury which forced him off in the first half of Villa's 3-2 comeback win over Red Bull Salzburg in the Europa League.
"Watkins, we will see tomorrow [Saturday]. Today he had a scan, and it's not a clear injury," boss Unai Emery said.
"He was tired yesterday and the scan is not giving us bad information.
"We will see tomorrow if he's not feeling comfortable or if he's feeling comfortable to decide to be with us on Sunday."
Watkins' injury adds to Villa's growing problems with Boubacar Kamara out for the season with a knee injury and John McGinn (knee) and Youri Tielemans (ankle) sidelined for months.
