Opportunity lost as Toledo suffers last-second setback at Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — A program statement victory morphed into yet another last-minute demoralizing loss for the Toledo Rockets.

On Saturday night at Illinois, Dequan Finn was about to go from goat to hero, throwing a game-changing interception and then leading the apparent game-winning touchdown.

But Toledo’s 28-27 lead dissolved when Luke Altmyer completed an improbable 33-yard pass on 4th and 4, and Illinois made a 29-yard field goal with eight seconds left to provide the final score of 30-28.

It was the second gut punch for the Rockets, who were cruising with a 19-7 lead midway through the third quarter.
