Edmond Sumner didn't play in Xavier's game against Seton Hall University, but his fingerprints were all over it.
The post-Sumner era got off to a winning start against the visiting Pirates as junior Xavier guard Trevon Bluiett punctuated another hot shooting night with the eventual game-winning score with 4.4 seconds remaining in regulation.
That allowed the Musketeers (16-6, 6-3 Big East) to hold on for a 72-70 win Wednesday night against Seton Hall (13-8, 3-6 Big East).
A Cintas Center crowd of 10,087 attended.
The focus coming into the game was how Xavier would play and respond without Sumner, the team's most dynamic playmaker, its second-leading scorer and a player getting looks from NBA scouts as a possible first-round draft pick.
